Mexican - American drug tunnels discovered

Posted Nov 29, 2011 by Bryen Dunn
U.S. authorities announced that they have discovered a second drug tunnel that links Mexico to the United States, reputed to be the route used to smuggle tons of marijuana betweent the two countries.
Authorities found another cross-border drug-smuggling tunnel between Tijuana, Mexico and San Diego, California. An estimated 17 tons of marijuana may have been retrieved in one of the most sophisticated tunnels of its kind found on US southern border.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Lauren Mack says the tunnel was found Tuesday in a warehouse in the city's Otay Mesa era. Reportedly the tunnel walls were lined with wood supports, the passage was equipped with lighting and ventilation systems, and it measured about 1.5 metres high and a metre wide.
The discovery isn't the first, as another tunnel was found in the same area last week, where authorities seized an undisclosed amount of marijuana. Coincidentally, on Monday a Mexican trucker was sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison for his role in a scheme last year that had passed more than 50 tons of marijuana through two tunnels that linked warehouses between the two cities..Those tunnels were also expertly constructed with lighting, ventilation and even rail cars.
Smugglers also use single-engine wooden boats to ferry bales of marijuana up the US Pacific coast and pilot low-flying aircraft that look like motorised hang-gliders to make quick drops across the border.
