After Kienan Hebert went missing from his home in Sparwood it was first believed he may have been sleepwalking, but police later announced that he had been abducted from his bed while his family was asleep. They named 46-year-old Randall Hopley, who has a criminal history, as a person of interest.
His parents made public pleas for his return, asking his abductor to drop him at a safe spot like a gas station or a car park.
"Kienan is only 3 years old right now, and as you know and we know, Kienan can't speak. So he can't tell us who you are," they said. "This is your chance now to get away. All we want is Kienan to come back with us and to be safe in our arms again."
Around 3 am Sunday morning someone called 911 and said the boy could be found in his home, which had been cordoned off and unoccupied. When police got there they found Kienan sitting on the couch with a blanket.
A medical examination found that he was unharmed, and later that morning he was playing on the front lawn with his siblings.
"To the person who returned Kienan safely, I just want to say thank you. It was the right thing to do," the CBC quoted Kienan's father Paul Hebert as saying.
"Kienan is happily home, and he's playing with his brothers and sisters."
Police are asking Randall Hopley to contact them.
"Our investigating is now shifting its focus from getting Kienan home safely to ensuring public safety by finding you, by finding Randall," CTV quoted RCMP Corporal Dan Moskaluk as saying. "You need to reach out to the police.
"We know how extremely difficult it's been, this time, for your family and yourself. But you've done the right thing so far. You've corrected many things."
Hopley's mother Margaret Fink said she was very glad to hear Kienan had been returned , and urged her son to go and see her.
Some people question how it was possible for someone to return Kienan to his home without being detected.
An RCMP press release states that: "We have not determined how they returned to the house."
Police are asking anyone who has seen Hopley to contact them. He is as white, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is 5’10’” and weighs 147 lbs. The last vehicle he was known to have been driving was a brown 1987 Toyota Camry with the BC licence plate 098 RAL.
The Globe and Mail reported that former Mayor David Wilks, who had also served as an RCMP officer in Sparwood, described Hopley as a “night owl” who would go into the bush for days, and said he would not be
surprised if the man had gone to the woods after returning Kienan to his home.
