In 1938 the Chicago Salvation Army established the first Friday in June as National Donut Day to honor the women volunteers who served donuts to soldiers during World War 1. The women were known as "lassies." reports National Donut Day is a reminder of the services provided by The Salvation Army. They report Major George Hood, National Community Relations and Development Secretary for The Salvation Army, said, "The Salvation Army serves nearly 70 million meals to those in need each year so there's no better way to highlight our work than by celebrating a great American food. So, while everyone enjoys a doughnut on Friday, we hope they'll also think about giving back to those less fortunate."
