At least 21 people have been killed by a bomb blast in outside a Coptic Christian church in the northern city of Alexandria.
The attack took place at 00:30 local time Saturday as worshippers had gathered to celebrate Mass on New Year’s Eve, Voice of America (VOA) reported. The explosion was described as “coming from a car” parked in front of the church.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
VOA said the Egyptian Al Qaeda “affiliate” usually took responsibility for bombings.
Meanwhile Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) said the explosion took place as the worshippers were emerging from the church service. The report added that some Christians then clashed with police before storming a nearby mosque and fighting with Muslims there.
The blast comes amid increasing tensions between Egypt’s Muslim and Christian communities. The Coptic Church is indigenous to Egypt with a School of Catechism founded in Alexandria as long ago as 190 A.D.
