Ten-year-old girl giving birth not unusual, girl's mother says
The young Romanian girl delivered her baby at a hospital in Jerez de la Frontera, southwestern Spain, on October 26, but who will keep the child is in question.
Authorities in Spain are not sure who should raise the child, the sex of which has not been disclosed. They said they have never had to deal with a 10-year-old giving birth before.
Micaela Navarro, Andalusia region's social affairs minister, said
: "The important thing is that both the baby and the mother should be cared for properly.
"If that is the case, then they can stay with their family without any problem. That is what we are checking on at the moment. She might be the mother, but she is herself a minor."
The young mother and her six pound, four ounce baby are doing fine, as reported by USA Today
The mother of the new young mom said it was not unusual for girls in their native country of Romania to have babies when they are as young as ten-years-old. It is not considered to be too young there, she claimed.
reported on several other young girls who gave birth to babies before this unnamed Romanian girl did.
"Earlier this year, a 9-year-old schoolgirl in northeast China gave birth to a healthy baby boy. In 2008, another 10-year-old girl in Idaho, who got pregnant at age 9, carried a baby to term. And back in 1939, as TIME reported, Lina Medina of Peru, became pregnant at the age of 5 years, 8 months, and became a mother by age 6 years, 5 months."
The father of the baby is also an underaged boy. Under Spanish law, "having consensual sex
with someone under age 13 is classified as child abuse." It is unclear if the young boy who fathered the child could be charged, but so far a criminal investigation has not been pursued in this case.
reported that young girls are at a higher risk during pregnancy because they are still developing themselves.
"Studies have shown that teenage girls are more likely to give birth to premature babies and their infants have a higher chance of dying by age one."
