Findings from The Arts And The Quality Of Life: The Attitudes Of Ontarians found most Ontarians believe that if their community has lost its arts activities they would lose something of value.
The arts play an important role in the life of Ontario's residents. When Canadian artists like singers, writers, actors and painters it gives people a sense of pride in Canadian achievement according to the findings of the survey.
"This research shows that even if the arts are not as important personally to an individual, these people recognize that the arts are important to their community," says Kathryn Townshend, OAC's Director of Research, Policy and Evaluation.
Ontarians believe that the government should be spending public dollars to support the arts and that arts are important to their own quality of life.
This is the first provincial survey of its kind since 1994, when a similar survey was commissioned by OAC. A comparison of responses across questions asked in both surveys found that the proportion of Ontarians with positive views on the arts and the quality of life has generally increased since 1994.
