The funding is needed for HCC Family Support Programs. These programs currently receive partial funding but that doesn't cover all the costs that come from running weekly activities and special events that are family-friendly. In order to get the funding the programs have to be free to the community. This has resulted in programs that run at a deficit. HCC relies on donations from the community, corporations and foundations in order to help keep the programs running.
Last year HCC held the first 5K Walkathon hoping to raise $5,000. The event exceeded expectations with $5,700 raised.
This year the goal is $5,000 again. The entire amount of money raised will be used to fund the Family Support Programs. Those who donate $20 or more receive a tax receipt.
Karen Warner, Director of Community Engagement and Communications said in a press release that the centre is looking for sponsors, prizes and people to help raise pledges and walk for the event.
"If everyone works together-good things will happen!"
The event takes place on Friday October 29 at 10 a.m. starting at the Harbourfront Community Centre located at 627 Queens Quay West.
