Op-Ed: Only You Can Prevent Manny Pacquiao From Fighting Margarito

Posted Aug 25, 2010 by Matthew-Paul Narciso
MannyPacquiao has never fought at 154 lbs. Antonio Margarito has fought there only once against a non-contender and struggled badly. This is not the stuff title bouts are made of. If you don't speak up within the next few hours, you can count on it.

I have always been a fan of Manny Pacquiao. I watched his fights as a young college student and have closely followed his career. With that said, whether you are a fan of Manny Pacquiao, Anotonio Margarito, or just boxing in general, it is important that this fight not happen. Antonio Margarito has come off a long suspension and has fought just once since being dismantled by an aged Shane Mosley. It seems ridiculous that a man who had been on a hot streak with the "assumed" benefit of an illegal advantage would then be publicly stripped of that advantage and suddenly lose badly to a man he was favored to trump by the widest of margins, then turn around and struggle again against a glorified sparring partner, then be offered a title shot in a weight class where he has not faced a single contender.
This fight will be another step in the wrong direction for boxing. As a boxing fan, you have just a few hours to make an impact. Let the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation know that it is unreasonable for them to grant a license to a man who has been denied in the original state of his offense. Also, since the loss of his "assumed" advantage, he has had two completely horrid showing, very reminiscent of his early career where he accumulated a great deal of his losses before teaming of with his new trainer and going on an incredible and nearly supernatural winning streak, knocking out world champions along the way. Margarito's camp attempted to make it clear the the Mosley fight where he was caught red handed was the very first offense, but looking back at his career, you can see that he struggled badly against mediocre competition before hooking up with Javier Capitello when he began knocking everybody out becoming known as a brutal force in the welterwieght class. It is clear to the boxing world that he had benefited long before the Mosley fight. Have your voice be heard, let Texas & Bob Arum know that this is unacceptable, you have only a few hours to do it!

Let Margarito face off against Cotto in a redemption bout, at the same time allowing Cotto a fair shot at what many feel was a tainted and career changing fight for him. The winner can then square off with Pacquiao after Pacquiao handles business with Marquez or Mayweather. Hearing Arum say that Marquez cannot compete at light welterweight or welterweight may be fair, but in light of the fact that he wants Margarito to fight for a title in a class that he does not even have a minor belt in seems ludicrous. Between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito you have a single fight against a non ranked fighter at 154 lbs. A single decision victory over a journeyman and suddenly we have a title shot being held at a catch weight for an undeserved crown. There is a long list of viable PPV opponents for Pacquiao including Bradley, Berto, Marquez, and the list goes on. All winnable but respectable fights to keep the world happy until Mayweather decides to "MAN UP" and smells the money, Lets get this straightened out.
