Hurt Locker locks out Avatar for Best Film at Academy Awards

The Best Director for the 2010 Academy Award went to a woman, Kathryn Bigelow. The nomination was presented by Barbra Streisand who had announced it emphatically that the plum could go to a woman for the first time.

As expected, Hurt Locker won the Oscar’s for Best Film, sweeping major awards since winning the award for Best Film in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
Avatar, the top grossing film of all time, won three major awards for Best Cinematography, Special Effects and Art Direction.
Again, realism in film was shown preference to sci-fi by the Oscar’s Board of Judges. Predictably, the new voting system took its toll on Avatar.
Since 1931, not a single sci-fi movie has ever won the coveted Oscar for Best Film.
