Police and military observers from UNAMID were on route to the Jebel Marra region when they were ambushed by gunmen.
The peacekeepers were taken along with three armoured personnel carriers by the gunmen and taken to an unknown site. Early Saturday morning all but two of the peacekeepers were released by the attackers. The gunmen kept the vehicles and equipment.
“UNAMID strongly condemns this unprovoked attack on its peacekeepers who were carrying out an important security and humanitarian mission for the benefit of the people of Jebel Marra,” the mission stated in a news release.
The attack occurred “although the mission had received assurances by belligerents that the UNAMID patrol could carry out its task,” it added.
