Fortunately the cars were travelling slowly behind a pace car at the time due to torrential rain when the massive gum tree fell at Forrest's Elbow, the last corner before the famous long Conrod Straight.
Organisers of the Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour Race had to halt the event for 52 minutes while safety and emergency crews cleared the tree with chainsaws and heavy lifting equipment.
The race resumed shortly after the track had been cleared and with three hours remaining the four leading cars are covered by 11 seconds.
In previous years unforeseen events have included a race leader eliminated by a rockfall as well as kangaroos and sheep wandering onto the track mid-race.
The annual race follows a traditional begun in the early 1960s when showroom standard cars were driven to the track by competitors and raced. The steep and winding Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst is renown as one of the toughest circuits in the world.
