Sullivan who is also known by his nickname "The Rev" has been with the punk-metal outfit since its beginnings in Huntington Beach, California in 1999.
The band, consisting also of vocalist Mister Shadows, lead guitarist Synyster Gates, rhythm guitarist Zacky Vengeance and bassist Johnny Christ achieved mainstream success in 2005 with their album "City of Evil".
They went on to win Best New Artist at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards.
Their latest album war released in 2007. The eponymous record saw a departure from their previous metalcore style to a more hard-rock sound and sold a half a million copies worldwide
Cause of death has yet to be determined and an autopsy by the Orange County coroner's office is pending.
A statement from his band-mates appeared on the band's website Tuesday:
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we tell you of the passing today of Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan. Jimmy was not only one of the world's best drummers, but more importantly he was our best friend and brother. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jimmy's family and we hope that you will respect their privacy during this difficult time.
