Big Rig Truck Falls Off San Francisco Bridge

The recently re-opened San Francisco Bay bridge has claimed yet another crash victim, this time with a fatality. A big rig truck and its driver fell off of the bridge while going westbound, plunging 200 feet and landing on the Yerba Buena Island. The driver, who died on the scene, was transporting a full load of pears at 3:30 am. It is suspected that he was speeding, going 50 mph in 35 mph zone that’s been designated on the infamous “S” curve recently implemented on the westbound traffic lanes. The curve was installed as a temporary detour while additional repairs were being made. CHP Officer Trent Cross states that this is the 44th accident on that stretch since it’s implementation. However, Caltrans spokesman Bob Haus doesn’t blame the design. Rather, he blames the drivers. When the bridge was closed last month for repairs, bumps were installed to let drivers know they were veering out of their lanes. More safety measures are scheduled for installation. Drivers simply need to slow down, Haus said.
