Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland's Foreign Minister, is visiting Washington to discuss a possible American troop increase in his country that would protect them from a possible attack by the Russian Federation, according to Russia Today. "Our wish is to have American troops stationed in our country as a shield against Russian aggression." Sikorski further cited that his government is feeling quite tense about being a bordering country of NATO. He later asked the question, “If you had 900 tanks on one side and six foot soldiers on the other, would you feel secure?” The Foreign Minister concluded that the possible troop increase would be a strategic maneuver by the United States military. Currently, there are only six US soldiers deployed in Poland and Sikorski is questioning American commitment to the eastern European country's security. However, as the Warsaw Business Journal reports, the Russian government is not keen on the idea. Konstantin Kosachev, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian State Duma, said the proposal is “absolutely unacceptable” and “Sikorski de facto calls on the US to review agreement between NATO and Russia, which provided that no large military contingent will be deployed on the territories of new NATO members.” One of the reasons why Russian authorities disapprove of this proposal is because when Poland joined NATO more than a decade ago, the US assured Russia that there would be no troop increase in Poland.
