This is the first year for the event which was started by Publishers Weekly to encourage book sales and promote recognition of bookstores across the U.S. According to the Publisher’s Weekly website the celebration is intended to be “a day devoted to celebrating bookselling and the vibrant culture of bookstores”. To draw customers in, bookstores are offering promotions, discounts, author signings, raffles and contests.
Although originally started to help introduce and promote struggling independent bookstores to the public, some national bookstore chains like Books-A-Million, Barnes & Noble and Borders are expected to participate as well. In addition, there are several national Christan bookstore chains that are also participating in the event.
Although this is the first year for the event, it is expected to be a success and will become an annual event. The event has gained momentum since its announcement in early September, due largely in part to the backing of well known industry player Publisher’s Weekly. Publisher’s Weekly provided free advertising for the event in its printed publications and website, as well as purchased advertising on other select websites. In addition, they created the event logo and provided fliers, bookmarks, signs and other free marketing material to bookstores to help promote National Bookstore Day.
This event also comes at the beginning of the Holiday shopping season and is expected to provide a much needed boost to book sales. As an added bonus, most of the best selling books have been discounted lately due to continuing price wars making it an even better time to grab great deals on books.
