On Sunday, Canada was named one of the most peaceful nations by the Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations and 18 other countries were recognized.
Eighteen nations, including Canada, have been named the most peaceful nations in the world by the Global Symposium of Peaceful Nations in Washington on Sunday, according to The Canadian Press. Canadian Ambassador to the United States Gary Doer accepted the award by the group.
Canada was most largely recognized for its support of United Nations peacekeeping missions, low crime rate levels and political stability. This award puts Canada eighth on the Symposium’s global peace index.
Singapore, according to The Strait Times, was also awarded as a peaceful nation for its efforts to achieve peace at home and abroad. Other nation recipients include Australia, Argentina, Portugal, Japan and the United Kingdom.
Nations to be considered very low on their Global Peace Index in 2009 are Russia, most African nations, India, Columbia and Venezuela.
