Journalist Athanasiadis has been released from Iranian prison
Iran has released Iason Athanasiadis-Fowden from prison. It is thought that Athanasiadis had been arrested on June 19 with no reason given for the arrest other than 'illegal activities."
Iran has said that the journalist had exceeded the duration of his visa in Iran.
The
Washington Times journalist, also known as Jason Fowden, has dual citizenship in Greece and the UK. It is believed that Athanasiadis-Fowden is the only foreign
press member that is being held by Iran from the post-election crisis in
Tehran.
Radio Free Europe reports:
"Because of the humanitarian efforts made by Iran's envoy to Greece...the Greek journalist was released today," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi told state television on July 5.
