A bidding war has been going on between four Hollywood studios for the rights to make the 1979 Atari arcade hit 'Asteroids'. The producer of recently released 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' Lorenzo di Bonaventura is set to produce and Matthew Lopez, writer of 'Bedtime Stories' is set to write the script.
'Asteroids' was a big hit for Atari when it was released in all of its monochrome vector glory back in 1979, before most of today's gamers were born. The game featured no storyline, the goal being to simply keep your triangular spaceship alive without hitting any asteroids and destroying them as you go. This leaves Universal open to create any story they like without the usual risk of game fans hating them for a poor adaption.
The next films from 'Asteroids'' producer and writer are respectively 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' and 'The Sorcerers Apprentice'.
