At the report of a shooting, Colorado Springs Police rushed to a residence on Chapel Hills Drive and Briargate Boulevard. Upon entering the house, they allegedly found the lifeless body of 9-year-old Ulysses Gudino. Attempts were made to resuscitate Ulysses, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also found in the home were the suspect's mother, 38-year-old Marina Gudino. She suffered a gun shot and a superficial stab wound to the chest. She is in stable condition. A 7-year-old girl was also in the home at the time of the shooting, but was unhurt. The suspect's father and 12-year-old male family member were not at home at the time.
The 13-year-old suspect is in police custody and is being held on first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder charges. His name has not been released. Even though the boy is only 13, he could be tried as an adult under Colorado Law.
The type of weapon used is not clear. Guns were removed from the home and a witness said there were "...four rifles or shotguns were removed from the home by police." So far, police are not saying if anyone else will be charged in the crime, or for providing the weapon that was used.
Neighbors of the Gudino family say they were "...quiet and polite, and never caused trouble." All the children in the family attend local schools. Grief counselors will be available at the schools to help students shaken up by the incident.
The report says "Balloons, stuffed animals and flowers were laid out on the porch of the family home."
