The secret files were released to the public today. One of the records show two U.S. fighter planes were ordered to shoot down an unidentified flying object (UFO) over the English countryside during the Cold War. One of the pilots said he was just seconds away from pulling the trigger and firing 24 rockets at the object, which was moving erratically. The pilot, Milton Torres, now 77-years-old, told Reuters the UFO was motionless in the sky for a brief period of time before it reached a speed of more than 7,600 mph (12,000 kph, approximately 10 Mach). Torres was about to shoot the 24 rockets when the UFO disappeared from the radar screen. Torres flew an F-86 D Sabre jet from the Royal Air Force base at Manston, Kent in May, in 1957. After the incident, Torres and others were warned by an unnamed man not to speak about the incident and he has remained silent until now. The files are available for everyone to read at the National Archives in London.
