Englishman’s Sight Restored After 66 Years: It’s Never Too Late For a Miracle

According to news sources, John Gray, aged 87, was told that he would never again see through his right eye after sustaining injuries during the Blitz of World War II. Throughout the ensuing years, Gray went for check-ups to a friend’s son, Frank Munroe, a qualified optometrist. Technological advances gave Frank Munroe many tools to work with when it came to evaluating Gray’s old war injury. He was able to determine that the retina of the damaged eye was healthy and that all the damage was to the lens. Still, an operation was risky.

Last year, Gray developed Macular Degeneration in his healthy eye. While at first this seemed to be terrible news, for it foretold total blindness in the near future, it turned out to be a blessing in scar-tissue disguise. Eye surgeon, Dr. Ian Bryce, removed Gray’s scar tissue and inserted a new artificial lens in his right eye, which could not have been done 60 years ago. It took a few weeks for Gray’s brain to adjust, but to his and everyone else’s delight, he soon began to see again. His vision is now good enough to read small print.

Frank Munroe has given his old friend his first set of bifocals with a lens in both the left and right eye. It would certainly seem that as far as far the human condition is concerned, miracles still happen, although they sometimes come in ways never expected.

Happy eyesight, John Gray.
