First Coin Written In Braille Released By The United States

The coin's display was the opener for the National Federation of the Blind's convention in Dallas. The coin was unveiled in front of about 1,000 people by U.S. Mint director Ed Moy, federation president Marc Maurer and U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions.

The word 'Liberty" appears above an image of Louis Braille. The Braille code for the word Braille is inscribed above an image of a boy reading a Braille book.

The coin will be available in the spring of 2009. The U.S. Mint is planning on producing 400,000 of the coins.

A surcharge of $10 will be added to the coins with the money made going to support programs for the blind.
