Why Earth is Screaming

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights

You are sitting at home, watching your digital satellite TV when suddenly the reception goes out. You log online only to find that a solar flare has knocked out reception in the entire state, and you scream in frustration along with every other satellite TV subscriber in the area. You could swear your screams could be heard from space, well they cannot, but the Earth is screaming for you.

The same radiation that blocks satellite signals from reaching earth is also responsible for the emission of a truly almost horrifying sound emanating from earth. The cacophony of shrieks, and R2D2 like chirps and whistles heard in this recording are due to charged particles entering Earth's magnetic field. The ear splitting noises are a soundtrack for northern lights or the Aurora Borealis. If the Ionosphere of Earth did not block us from the noise, it would overwhelm our airwaves with radio waves 10 times the power of military grade signals, making it impossible for even TV and Radio communication.

The Auroral Kilometric Radiation (AKR), as it is called, was picked up by orbiting satellites and sent to Earth. This signal can also be heard through space by, say aliens, who know what to listen for. The discovery of the sounds have lead scientists to listen to other planets in our solar system, some of which have produced the same noises. This has lead scientists to speculate that the same radiation can be bouncing off of planets in other solar systems and may lead to the detection of far off alien worlds.
