101-year-old man plans to compete in London Marathon

Buster Martin is 101 years old and currently works for a London plumbing firm, making him the Britain’s oldest employee. He now plans to become the world’s oldest marathon runner by completing the London Marathon race. He already has a celebration in mind -- after finishing the race, he'll enjoy a pint of beer and a cigarette.

The former Army physical training instructor works three days a week for a London plumbing firm. He came out of retirement two years ago, saying he was bored at home.

Martin said he is training for the April 13 race during his spare time. He spoke to Reuters from his workplace at Pimlico Plumbers:
"I've said I'll attempt it…I haven't said I'll complete it. If I do make it, all the better. I hadn't thought of doing it before but someone asked me and the money goes to charity so why not?"

Even if he just competes it will be inspiring for others who are in the same situation.

The money raised for his sponsorship to run will be going to the Rhys Daniels Trust -- it provides accommodation for families of patients in children’s hospitals.

If Martin runs in the race, he will be the world’s oldest marathoner, beat the previous record-holder by eight years. After finishing the race, he plans to celebrate it with a pint of beer and a cigarette. He said about his secret of living long:
People ask what is my secret but I haven't got one. They say fags and booze are bad for you -- but I'm still here, aren't I?
One secret of his long life may relate to doing what he likes to do even though others doubt it. I hope he lives long and runs again.
