According to the testimony of four suspects, Baitullah Mehsud who is the leader of the Taliban in Pakistan with connections to Al-Qaeda was the mastermind behind the assassination of the former PPP leader Benazir Bhutto. It is said that Muhsud paid over $7,000 to get the suicide jackets which were instrumental to the blast that resulted in Bhutto’s death.

In the past, Muhsud had denied that he was responsible for the attack. It is also known that Al-Qaeda has been trying to get rid of Bhutto for many years. Currently, Muhsud is still at large.

After Bhutto’s death, it was concluded by both the CIA and Pakistan’s government that it was Mehsud who was responsible. However, many Pakistanis said while they do believe that Mehsud played a role, most of the blame should go to Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharraf.

On Wednesday, a judge received testimony from two suspects that they provided the bomber with a house to hide out in, transportation to get to the point, a pistol, and a suicide jacket. The two were also at Rawalpindi park, the place where Bhutto’s assassination had taken place.

“We are going to break the whole chain and we are confident we’re going to reach the perpetrators,” said Javed Iqbal Cheema, spokesman for Pakistan’s Interior Ministry. He added: “We will exactly tell you who are the people behind this unfortunate incident.”
