Nifong had his
law license revoked last year when a three-member panel concluded he had been intentionally deceptive in his conduct with regard to the 2006 case brought against Duke University student athletes. The members of the panel called his actions "politically motivated".
The prosecutor who took over the case after Nifong resigned took the extraordinary measure of not only dismissing the charges but also pronounced the players completely innocent,
referring to them as "victims of a 'tragic rush to accuse' by a rogue prosecutor who could be disbarred for his actions."
According to the
report at The Smoking Gun, Nifong has filed bankruptcy, citing $180 million in liabilities under the heading "Creditors holding unsecured nonpriority claims", a number which apparently comes from
outstanding legal actions against the former prosecutor.
