Op-Ed: World Summit Heads For The Toilet

While some of us who are living in the modern world are busy with such duties as deciding which toilet bowl cleaner works best, there are well over 2.6 billion people living in Asia, Africa and in Central and South America who do not concern themselves with such luxuries. In fact, not only do they not have any toilets to clean, they don’t have any to use
.
And 700 million of them live in India.

This is the main reason why over 40 countries are meeting at the World Summit in Delhi, India. They are hoping to find feasible and technological ways to bring these countries up to civlized standards.

In India, some villagers need to rise before dawn and race to the tracks just so they can relieve themselves. Unfortunately, for train travelers, this is not a pleasant sight to behold.

In other places, some villages either relieve themselves in their fields or they have to head out into the woods. As you can imagine, this is far more serious and dangerous for women. It subjects them to diseases and it also makes them easy prey for rapist who happen to be lurking about.

The UN hopes that by the year 2015 that half these people will have toilets installed in their homes or other places, which will facilitate them.

For some strange reason, I find it difficult to believe that they don’t even have a pot to piss in, or that the thought of digging a hole in the ground hasn’t occurred to them.

Could it be that, if the UN knew about it, that they might not take the matter seriously and perhaps even relieve themselves from such duties?
