Clarence Court director Lisa Rowe said:

"Alpacas are extensively used in Australia and New Zealand to safeguard sheep because they will protect them with their lives.

"We know that happy hens lay the tastiest eggs, and for that reason we recruited the alpacas.

"They are great company for the birds and will not only ensure they feel safe and sound, but fully entertained too."

The alpaca is a smaller animal than the llama and is kept in herds in South America. They graze on the level heights of the Andes mountains in Equador, Peru, Bolivia and Chile.

Although they resemble sheep and are also highly prized for their wool, they are larger animals with very long necks, and they come in a variety of colors, unlike sheep.

And now they are becoming known as good guard animals. Perhaps one day Detroiters will own alpacas instead of pit bulls......
