Why We Serve is a program that helps the average civilian, get to know the mind of a representative of the military citizen. There is often a disconnect from most civilians and military personel. It's almost an alien mindset. We in the military have more rules than average, and more benefits.
Each volunteer of the Why We Serve program is not allowed to speak policy, nor are they allowed to express views on behalf of the government or branch of service they represent. What they can do, is speak freely about why they joined, and how their life is different.
I might talk about my experiences in Iraq, my benefits, my family, how I managed to make Master Sergeant in only nine years. I could let people know what I think of the war, and how I would do things. My personal opinions and life story. Each of the speakers are recently returned from operations in Afghanistan, Iraq or the Horn of Africa.
Communication is the first step towards understanding. This program is a great step in helping others understand a different point of view, and a different lifestyle. Confirmed speakers are provided at no cost to the host organization, regardless of location, throughout the country.
