So they weren't invited, neither were actual experts in the field of greenhouse emissions. Instead eight of the world's leaders met to discuss targets for cuts in greenhouse emissions. (supposedly)
Of course they had to do it in style and luxury at the Heiligendamm hotel (I don't know what the name stands for but I like it.)
Why it would take a variety of up to 11 different boats to supposedly deliver petitions is unclear as the spokesman for Greenpeace didn't happen to mention that in his statements. And what would make them think that they would get anywhere near the place is beyond me other than just being another publicity stunt that is.
The boats were carrying petitions calling on the G8 leaders to cut global C02 emissions by 30% by 2020 and 50% by 2050 to limit world temperatures rises to 2C (36F).
This all went down
after everything from horses, helicopters, armoured cars, unmarked vehicles and riot police were used to cut off the land routes to the German town as they had to deal with everything from bubbles, clowns and protesters via various means by land. So I'm sure the police were really in the mood to deal with possible nuts making a run for the resort area by water.
"It's a terribly dangerous act. Greenpeace is well known in Germany. We are peaceful and non-violent," the spokesman said.
Yes I totally agree it was a dangerous act (dumba**) to send people in boats at high speeds against the German police, navy, coastguard and customs who were all working together to provide security. Yes we've seen just how non-violent you can be. The proof is in the pictures, when your told to stand down and you continue on you will be perceived as a threat and taken down.
And I reiterate (dumba**) your group is just lucky you weren't fired upon instead of just being rammed.
Personally I don't really see anything useful coming from this summit meeting that will actually do any good other than more promises to act and putting a lot of people in harms way when a simple teleconference could have been done in a safe manner. Hey businesses do it every day. But these are world leaders we can't expect them to use common sense any more than Greenpeace has been shown to be capable of.
