Newman is a nine-time Oscar nominee. He has starred in over 50 films.

In an interview on U.S. television, he said: "I'm not able to work anymore...at the level that I would want to."

Newman won the Academy Award for best actor in 1987 for the film The Color of Money.

On ABC's "Good Morning America," Newman said:
"You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention.

"So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."

Paul Newman has been an actor for more than five decades. One of his most famous films was 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

His recent projects include 2002's Road to Perdition and the mini-series Empire Falls. He also has a successful food business. All profits from his food are donated to charity.

Newman has been married to actress Joanne Woodward since 1958. He was born in Ohio.
