Can you imagine the uses?

Measuring only two and a half inches wide and one one-hundredth of an inch thick, it is extremely flexible and cannot be broken. The new display is a mix of two separate technologies: a type of thin, organic film transistor which gives it its flexibility, and organic electroluminescent display.

Sony made the announcement on its website and posted a video of which a short excerpt can be found here via the AP.

The new technology cannot be imitated with Liquid Crystal Display(LCD) or plasma, giving Sony an opportunity to jump ahead to the forefront flat-panel technology. It currently lags far behind in the field behind its rivals. Sony has yet to decide on any commercial avenues for its use but clearly it is a huge step forward and some uses may include other aspects of every day life:

In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost or a person’s wrist, even worn as clothing. Adding, Perhaps it can be put up like wallpaper, said Sony spokesperson Chisato Kitsukawa.

The 'electronic paper' technology comes right out of the future and similar technologies are being perfected by other electronics notables like LG. Philips LCD and Seiko Epson.

To come up with a flexible screen at that image quality is groundbreaking, Mori said. You can drop it, and it won’t break because it’s as thin as paper.
