Babies who die without baptism can now go to heaven. Maybe.

In a reversal of long standing Catholic tradition, Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed that babies who die without being baptized are no longer condemned to eternity in Limbo.
The idea hinges on the Catholic belief that unbaptized children are still tainted by original sin and therefore banned from entering heaven. Theologians have theorized that these children's souls were in a state of eternal bliss and stayed in the area between heaven and hell called Limbo. All of this without any formal church doctrine on the subject.
Now the church admits that it really doesn't have a clue as to the fate of these unbaptized children's souls and confesses that they mighy indeed have a chance at heaven.
Pope John Paul II and Benedict had urged further study on limbo, in part because of "the pressing pastoral needs" sparked by the increase in abortion and the growing number of children who die without being baptized, the report said.
In the document, the commission said there were "serious theological and liturgical grounds for hope that unbaptized infants who die will be saved and brought into eternal happiness."
So,after years of making parents who've just lost a child feel even worse, the church admits it's clueless. And they wonder why the numbers of faithful are dwindling. Church policy should have some basis in scripture, not just the whims of the hierarchy!
