Disney first: black princess in animated film

The Walt Disney Co. has started production on an animated musical fairy tale called “The Frog Princess,” which will be set in New Orleans and feature the Walt Disney Studio’s first black princess.
It should be out in 2009. It is the first hand drawn film they have committed to(I reported last month about how they are returning to hand drawn cartoons)
They describe it as An American Fairy Tale. The girl's name is Maddy and she lives in New Orleans. So far when you talk about the other 8 Princess' in Disneys repertoire, you are talking $3 billion dolars retail sales since 1999 alone.
It has been a long progression, when you think about the minorities in Disneys recent past, characters from Aladdin, Mulan etc. Finally we have a black lead woman.
This is a good move by them. Why they did not do it sooner is beyond me. As a white person I look at a story like this and I wonder how it must feel to a person of color. The fact that it is even news worthy is sad. But at least they have done it.
Maybe soon they can just draw them how they want, and how the story demands, without thinking about any demographics at all.
