New app delivers breaking news, analysis, photos and feature content to iPad readers

TORONTO, July 28 /CNW/ - The Globe and Mail, Canada's National Newspaper, has launched a news app for the Apple iPad, available for download at the iTunes App Store (Globe and Mail for iPad). Developed by Spreed Inc. of Toronto, The Globe's app provides readers with breaking news and analysis, a daily photo gallery and the ability to download content  for offline reading. The app also includes feature content selected specifically for the iPad reader.

"The Globe and Mail continues to evolve products and news offerings to anticipate the needs of our readers and now with The Globe's iPad app, we're bringing the experience of The Globe and Mail directly to our readers at home, at work and on the go," said Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO, The Globe and Mail. "Whether mobile readers, digital newspapers or traditional print products, The Globe and Mail delivers award-winning journalism into the hands, devices and browsers that are most relevant to our readers."

The most recent readership numbers from NADbank, for the 2009 calendar year, reveal The Globe and Mail continues to show significant growth for both newspaper and online. The Globe's online readership jumped 12.7 per cent to 1,245,600 average weekly readers. In the month of June, Globe mobile properties generated 20 million page views through mobile phone and online readers.

In June, The Globe and Mail launched the Globe2Go epaper (globeandmail.com/globe2go) allowing readers to view and download a digital version of the printed Globe and Mail on mobile phones and the iPad.

The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, is a division of CTVglobemedia, a dynamic multi-media company, which also owns CTV Inc., Canada's number-one private broadcaster.
