Hyatt Regency Boston Hotel Spots Gorilla Rappelling Down Hotel for a Good Cause
Boston, MA (PRWEB) August 01, 2012
On July 21st, individuals strolling around downtown Boston, may have glanced up to witness the strange site of a gorilla scaling the walls of Hyatt Regency Boston. In reality, this was not a reenactment of the 1933 classic, King Kong, but an unbelievably heart-racing fundraiser for Special Olympics MA (SOMA).
On July 20 and 21, Hyatt Regency Boston, Special Olympics MA and Over the Edge all partnered for the second year in a row to raise money for Special Olympics. Over 100 individuals signed up with the personal goal of raising $1,000 or more. In total, the event has raised over $149,000 thus far, with donations still streaming in. In summation, almost $290,000 has been raised between the 2011 and 2012 events.
Special Olympics Massachusetts is a leader in providing healthy lifestyles through sports and healthcare-related programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities. SOMA’s mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of well-coached Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Special Olympics provides these individuals with continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, express courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Olympics athletes, and the community. With this said, Special Olympics Massachusetts receives very little federal or state funding and is almost entirely dependent on individual and corporate donations to support its programs.
In an effort to contribute to the cause, the Boston hotel started a Hyatt Helpers team, comprised of seven brave associates and managers, including General Manager, Philip Stamm. The Hyatt Helpers team worked tirelessly to receive pledges and proudly earned the #2 fundraising spot, raising over $14,000. Mr. Stamm stated, “Our Hyatt Helpers team wanted to support Special Olympics athletes and gain an understanding of the fears and challenges they face daily. If they can make that kind of effort every day, certainly the Hyatt team can go over the edge in support of those athletes.”
