$1 Million in Additional Energy Assistance Available for Sizzling Summer Bills

PR Newswire

DENVER, July 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Coloradans weather the last sizzling weeks of summer, Energy Outreach Colorado (EOC) is making available an additional $1 million to emergency assistance sites across the state to help struggling families keep up with energy bills so as to remain safe in their homes.

"Hot summer temperatures can be life-threatening for seniors, families with young children and people with special needs who may not be able to keep up with their energy bills or escape the heat by going to an air-conditioned shopping mall or swimming pool," said Skip Arnold, executive director for Energy Outreach, a statewide non-profit that raises money for low-income energy assistance.

"It is also helpful for concerned citizens to check on elderly relatives, friends, neighbors, or others who may have difficulty escaping the heat," he added.

EOC distributed the additional funding this month to 129 assistance organizations to ensure they have adequate energy assistance funds to last until the next funding year begins in October.  In total, Energy Outreach plans to distribute nearly $10 million in energy assistance this year, as well additional grants to increase the energy efficiency of affordable housing and nonprofit facilities.
