Slimband: Gastric Band Can Increase Chances of Pregnancy After IVF for Overweight Women

A new study finds that IVF treatments are impeded by obesity--but lifestyle changes, coupled with a procedure like Slimband, might help increase the efficacy of the treatment.
NEW YORK, NY, July 17, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For many couples, there are few things more disheartening than trying to conceive a child, only to find that one or both partners are infertile. Thankfully, many medical advances have been made to offer couples better opportunities for overcoming fertility issues and ultimately having children--advances such as in-vitro fertilization, or IVF. Sometimes, however, these treatment options need a boost to become more effective. A recent study finds that IVF has a lower chance of being effective if the woman is obese, but lifestyle changes, including exercise and nutrition, can improve the odds of IVF helping the couple conceive--and so can a weight-loss procedure like Slimband.
Slimband is an adjustable gastric band that is available to obese individuals in Canada, and works in tandem with a comprehensive 5-year support program to help individuals lose weight and keep it off. The band has been shown to help individuals shed as much as 58% of excess weight over the span of three years.
Slimband have released a new statement to the press, responding to the new IVF study. "The body's systems are interconnected and everything needs to work in harmony, so it makes sense that this research has found lower effectiveness of IVF treatments for obese women," the statement says.
The statement goes on to stress the fact that Slimband is ultimately designed to promote safe, healthy and sustainable weight loss, which in turn could help to relive many obesity related conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. "The Slimband procedure can help our patients lose weight and keep it off for the long term," reads the press statement. "This treatment may improve the chances for obese women who are trying to have a child through fertility treatments."
Not only is Slimband effective in aiding weight loss, and as a result potentially heightening the effects of IVF, but it is also fully adjustable to allow for the dietary needs of pregnancy. "In addition, the adjustability of the band allows for increased calorific intake, when needed, so it can stay in place during the pregnancy," the statement says.
The Slimband statement concludes by affirming that the 30 minute laparoscopic procedure is ideal for obese individuals who are trying to lose weight in order to lead a healthier, fitter lifestyle. "Regardless of whether a woman is undergoing IVF treatments, losing weight if you're obese is absolutely something that should be done to improve health and quality of life. We'd advise speaking with your doctor first to find out is Slimband is the right choice for you"
