AKRON, Ohio, July 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) crews from Mon Power, Potomac Edison, West Penn Power and Ohio Edison continue working to restore power to more than 222,300 customers following severe thunderstorms that impacted the area Friday evening. At the height of the storm, approximately 566,000 customers were without power.
While the company's storm restoration process is working to restore power to customers as soon as possible, it could be a week before the hardest-hit areas – particularly parts of West Virginia – are fully restored.
The current FirstEnergy outage totals by utility include:
Mon Power – 170,000 customers. The majority of affected customers in the Weirton area are expected to be restored around midnight tonight; customers in the Morgantown area are expected to be restored around midnight Monday night; estimated restoration times for other areas will be later this week.
Potomac Edison – 45,000 customers. The majority of Potomac Edison customers in Maryland will be restored by late Tuesday and Wednesday; the remaining Potomac Edison customers in West Virginia will be restored later this week.
West Penn Power – 4,000 customers. The majority of West Penn Power customers will be restored around midnight tonight, with the remainder around midnight Monday.
Ohio Edison – 3,300 customers. The majority of customers in the Mansfield area will be restored this evening; customers in the Marion area will be restored by Monday evening; and customers in the Springfield area will be restored by Tuesday evening.
As debris from the storm is being cleared, customers are cautioned never to touch downed lines. Customers should always assume downed wires are carrying electricity and are reminded to keep their children and pets away from downed wires.
