BRANDON, FL, June 04, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A lawsuit filed by personal injury attorney Gene Odom, on behalf of his client, Retired Navy SEAL Senior Chief Don Shipley has revealed a concerning trend that is common among almost all "Phony SEALs" that they have encountered. That trend is a predatory disposition towards those more naive and vulnerable.
After digging into the behavioral traits of the current defendants, as well as the behavioral traits of other major offending "Phony SEALs," one common trait appears to be present. Virtually all of the offenders have some background or behavioral characteristics that are evidence of a sociopathic psychiatric disorder associated with violence or an obsessive stalking type disposition.
The lawsuit filed by
Tampa Attorney Odom on Senior Chief Shipley's behalf was originally intended to expose Phony SEALs and other "hero-like" military imposters on behalf of those real warriors who trained, passed the rigorous tests of physical and mental fortitude, and ultimately fought valiantly for our freedom.
Shipley's civil lawsuit was essentially a direct response to a federal appeals court's ruling that the Stolen Valor Act was unconstitutional.
The court held that the Act violated the First Amendment freedom of speech by making it a crime to claim unearned military honors. It is unclear whether the U.S. Supreme Court will overturn this decision.
There is no such constitutional protection in civil claims. Shipley, through the operation of his nationally known training course program, called Extreme SEAL Experience, was therefore perfectly positioned to claim a realized and / or potential effect on his business as a consequence of these Phony SEALs.
Phony SEALs like William N. Brockbrader now have virtually free and uninhibited access to media outlets through the Internet. Websites like You Tube, Facebook and others are perfect outlets for phonies to tell elaborate war story fairytales that capture the attention of any vulnerable browser who may be surfing for military or Navy SEAL information.
Attorney Odom says that when the lawsuit was originally filed, the greatest danger was originally seen as some portion of the public believing such fairytales. The consequence of misleading Internet video posts going viral could cause a drastic misperception in the true character and integrity of an honorably discharged or retired real Navy SEAL. That risk, of course, is that persons who view these videos get a false sense of the character and professional status of all Navy SEALs.
William N. Brockbrader has never been a Navy SEAL. To make matters worse, he served time in prison for statutory rape and has encountered additional criminal charges since being released from prison. Brockbrader's willingness to tell lies so easily to an audience of unknown size, and that could grow viral, caused Odom and Shipley to take legal action. Odom and Shipley found an uncanny similarity in the behavioral characteristics of all of these phonies in that each one of them had a history, or was being accused of, stalking, violence or other predatory type behavior - mainly against women.
Attorney Odom, of the
Martinez-Odom Law Group in the Tampa area, consulted a well-known Harvard-trained Tampa Bay psychiatrist, Dr. Walter Afield, to look further into these similar behavioral characteristics. Dr. Afield evaluated the various phonies' behavioral characteristics, from sexual misconduct to stalking to violence, all occurring against vulnerable victims - especially women. Based on this evaluation, he determined that these characteristics meet the criteria for DSM IV diagnoses of sociopathic disorder with violent or predatory tendencies.
The preservation of the honor and valor of those who have legitimately trained and passed the rigorous testing requirements is paramount. There is also tangible benefit that should be obtained through the pursuit of this lawsuit. That is the public awareness of every single woman, and her family, who may encounter a military imposter wanting to play war hero.
Don Shipley, who has devoted his entire career protecting and defending the freedoms of otherwise helpless and innocent Americans, has found another mission. Part of it is maintaining the valor of real Navy SEALs. The other part is protecting another group of potential victims from the predatory actions of phony SEALs. The potential victims are mainly the single women who would end up on the other side of a restaurant dinner table listening to false tales of heroism.
