Design Dental Group Abashed by Number of Children Not Receiving Dental Care

Over 16 million children who have Medicaid coverage are not receiving adequate dental care. Design Dental Group finds this oversight in healthcare practices to be atrocious and is assisting low-income children in finding affordable, free dental care.
NEW YORK, NY, May 29, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- According to ABC News, 2009 found over 16 million children, all with Medicaid coverage, who did not receive proper dental care. The report asserts that dentists and even emergency room doctors are having to treat devastating--and preventable--dental conditions. These conditions range from decay to bacteria to cavities and, in severe cases, have led to death. Design Dental Group, a Houston-based dental care facility, is appalled at the high number of children who are not receiving proper dental treatment. The above cited 16 million children without dental treatment only reflects the number of kids who have Medicaid and are not getting proper oral care, not all of the children in the United States who are not receiving the recommended dental treatments. As a result, Design Dental Group is assisting youth in its area in obtaining proper dental services by providing information about free events in the community.
The issue lies in the fact that Medicaid's reimbursement rates are so low. Dentists are able to opt out of providing care, and many have done so because they do not receive the payment necessary to cover the services they provide.
"The Medicaid rates are so low that dentists are not willing to participate in the Medicaid program," commented Dr. Frank Catalonotto in the previously cited article. "You can't blame the dentists, really, because the cost of delivering the service is more than the reimbursement they receive."
Forgoing proper dental care can result in a variety of health concerns. According to ABC News, tooth infections can spread to other areas of the body and, in extreme cases, end in death.
Additionally, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and osteoporosis are all associated with improper dental care.
To help local families overcome the challenge that Medicaid presents to dental treatment, Design Dental Group is providing information about free dental services in the Houston area.
"Low income families in the Houston, Texas, area can receive annual free dental care through the University of Texas Dental Branch's 'Give Kids a Smile Day,'" commented Dr. Melanie T. Bibb, leader of Design Dental Group. "This event is a day long affair at the University of Texas Dental Branch's Medical Center clinic."
The team at Design Dental Group hopes that this information sheds light on two important facts: that a solution is needed for the funding of dental care and that free services are available to those in need.
