The last two remaining open French ski resorts of Tignes and Val Thorens have now closed, ending the country’s ski season. Whilst other Alpine ski areas in Austria, Italy and Switzerland remain open, they are only resorts with glaciers.
Heading further north however, the story changes for the ski resorts of Northern Europe. Ski conditions throughout Scandinavia and much of Scotland have been especially good this May 2012. The glacial ski resort of Folgefonn in Norway is already open for the spring/summer ski season with a staggering eight metre snow base initially, plus 80cm of fresh snow from the opening weekend last week. Another of the Norwegian glacier resorts; Stryn, is due to open on 24 May, with a snow base of 9m according to reports. The Swedish resort of Riksgransen is reported to have a substantial base of snow. The resort, famed for midsummer skiing under the midnight sun is set to host this year’s Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships 2012 on 15-17 May.
Scotland, after having closed ski areas early due to an unusually warm winter, is now making the most of the late season snowfall. Snow has been falling steadily since the middle of April allowing CairnGorm above Aviemore, to remain open. The CairnGorm Mountain Marketing Manager Colin Kirkwood said “Fans have enjoyed a succession of classic days on the hill in the last week and with the forecast set to stay cold and the possibility of some significant snowfall during the week there are opportunities for some great midweek snowsports with fresh powder to play on. The resort plans to continue to offer snowsports all week and will open lifts subject to demand”
Late season skiing in North America has fared well too, particularly the Canadian ski resorts of Lake Louise and Sunshine near Banff. Both are still making the most of all-time seasonal snowfall record highs. The resort of Sunshine remains open for another couple of weeks, and Lake Louise, has announced a bonus weekend this weekend to celebrate.
Crystal Ski offers ski holidays to the top ski resorts in the USA and Canada, as well as several European destinations. Ski deals 2013 can now be found on their site.
