HEALTH ALERT: Matthew Vettese Urges Americans to Analyze Their Diets

Rising consumer concern about U.S. food safety and nutrition has the public requesting more intense product labels. Health and nutrition expert, Matthew Vettese, is part of this initiative and pushes for increased awareness.
NEW YORK, NY, May 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It happens all the time - word of a compromised food product quickly spreads and consumers end up questioning everything they put in their stomachs. Widespread scares concerning food processing and development has contributed to significant drops in business for major corporations including Beef Products Inc. and Starbucks. Expert dietician and nutrition analyst, Matthew Vettese, weighs in on the subject and is leading a movement for Americans to become even more aware of what they eat.
A recent Business Week report addresses the rise in concern, stating that recent polls show 24 percent of Americans desire more detailed product labels. This specific demand has increased 18 percent from the 2010 study conducted by the International Food Information Council. As a result, Americans are asking manufacturers to address further data on nutrition, potential allergens and other ingredients.
While more informative products would certainly hold manufacturers accountable for their products, it doesn't necessarily mean they will understand the data. Matthew Vettese is a food expert who has spent years studying the effects that modern food has on our bodies. Although he is strong proponent of the natural and green movements, he knows American consumers will continue to buy packaged and processed foods. On the subject of nutrition labels, Vettese comments, "Most of the time our eyes are attracted to the basic data like calories, total fat and total carbohydrates. However, the public needs to read the ingredients and know what those ingredients are."
While earning his PhD in nutritional science, Vettese wrote extensive research papers on the ambiguity of processed food ingredients. In his essays, he compared eating to voting, "You shouldn't vote for a candidate if you don't know what they stand for. Likewise, you shouldn't eat something without knowing what exactly it contains."
The growing trend in childhood obesity is just one of many reasons Matthew Vettese believes the public should educate themselves on nutritional information. He has participated in several seminars with some of the nation's top medical practitioners, and has connected the root of many chronic illnesses to mismanaged diets.
"Increased awareness about diet is always a good thing," Vettese states, "but we are responsible for our own bodies and need to know how we will react to a specific ingredient." In part of his efforts to increase national nutrition awareness, Vettese and other nutritionists are visiting public schools and hospitals all across the country to address the effects of certain foods and ingredients. Matthew Vettese does not push any particular diet, but believes that early education on nutrition will help develop a society more conscious of its health.
