The saying “a picture is worth a thousand words” is truly brought to life within the realm of photojournalism. While news articles serve to inform us on current events, nothing breathes more realism and emotion into a story than a photo. Photojournalism is a fascinating art of storytelling that allows for one picture or multi-media experience to speak volumes to many. It requires vision, compassion and immense talent—skills that have been mastered by two of Exposure, Spring 2012’s guests, Steve Russell and Jim Rankin.
As four-time Eastern Canadian News Photographer's Association Photographer of the Year, twice-honoured National Press Photographer's Association's Photographer of the Year and winner of The National Newspaper Award for Sports Photography, Steve Russell is an amazing addition to this year’s lineup. With a unique visual sense and exemplary technical skill, Steve's work has graced the pages of The Toronto Star for over a decade. His has a no-holds barred approach to photography; for Steve, the image has to speak for itself, with the camera only serving to aid, not overwhelm the subject matter of the story. Schooled in traditional technique, but absorbed by the possibilities of new technology, Steve presents fascinating insight into the world of photography's most demanding skill set: that of the photojournalist.
Award-winning Toronto Star Photojournalist Jim Rankin captures the horrific and the beautiful and presents us with his unique vision of the world in a form that is accessible as well as informative. Since 2002, the seven-time National Newspaper Award nominee has incorporated multimedia presentation into his work with several key projects, designed as interactive multi-media experiences. It is his work that has broken the traditional hold of photojournalism as a print-media centric field. Jim's photography and multimedia endeavours have been recognized by the U.S. National Press Photographers Association, Society for News Design, News Photographers Association of Canada and the U.S. Online Journalism Awards. Exposure is proud and honoured to feature Jim as a speaker and thank him for spending some time away from the field to present his work.
Exposure is extremely excited to welcome these talented individuals to the stage, and we can’t wait to see you there!
