On the edge of Central Park sits the 13 acres-wide brick and stone monument, the largest of its kind in the United States. From Greek and Roman arts dating back to the ancient Roman empire to the most contemporary and modern arts, the Museum brings over 5000 years of ancient history and global arts to life.

Is it safe to visit the Met Museum?

Visiting the Met Museum in New York is safe, provided that visitors follow the health and safety guidelines. Matthew Keezer recommends that travelers prospecting a trip to the Met Museum observe social distancing, face covering, temperature check, and hand sanitization. However, visitors coming to the Mets from outside of New York, are be required to complete the online Travel Health Form. Should their temperature also read above 100.4 degrees, the Museum authorities would ask them to visit another day. 

When to visit

The museum building is open between 10:00 am to 5:30 pm from Sunday-Thursday. On weekends, Friday and Saturday, it is open to visitors between 10:00 am and 9:00 pm. However, visitors are not allowed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and the first Monday in May; these days are exceptions. 

It is wiser to visit the Museum on weekdays as the large number of crowds that come in on weekends can make a trip less adventurous. 

Preparing your trip to the Met Museum

The Met Museum is an enormous site. A typical 2-3 hours of the visit can be insufficient to consume its contents, divided among 17 curatorial departments. To enjoy the best experience on this trip, visitors are advised to have a game plan. Matthew Keezer suggests these tips to for preparing a trip to the Met Museum of Arts;

A prospect is advised to get the Met Museum mobile map on their smartphone; it supports all operating systems. While they can also get a free printed map at the site, having the mobile version offers a greater advantage. Such visitor can explore exciting places beforehand and also get a 3D feel of the art exhibition closely. For a livelier experience, they can also the free audio tour feature. 

  • Camera

The Met Museum gallery is an enchanting sight; one should grab a camera along to document its wonders and watch them come alive even after they have left the site. However, they should know that the Museum does not allow either video shoots or selfie sticks. So, visiting with a friend could be relieving in such moments.

  • Bottle of water

Exploring the Met museum’s immense depth can take hours, as food and drinks from outside are not allowed touring along with a bottle of water is the best bet. 

  • Note/Sketch Pad

If a visitor wishes to document their experience creatively? The Met allows them to find a comfortable corner where they can represent these amazing sights. However, only pencil and paper are allowed as other writing objects could potentially damage an artwork.
