Algorand has a Stunning Vision for 2021 Aiming to a Decentralized Governance and DAO

BOSTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / December 30, 2020 / Algorand protocol is growing really fast and nowadays an average of 500,000 transactions per day are posted on its chain. More than 500 companies are developing applications on Algorand, generating several new transactions, taking advantage of unique layer-1 smart contracts and the other great features of the platform. Algorand is upgrading the smart contract capabilities of DeFi solutions to host billions of users and facilitate tens of millions of daily transactions for a very negligible transaction fee.

Performance vision

According to Silvio Micali, in the meanwhile the Algorand has been continuing to add new functionalities to the protocol, its performance will improve in 2021 without sacrificing decentralization. Indeed:

  • Block size: will grow from 5,000 to 25,000
  • Block finalizations: time needed to ensure that a new block is permanently added to the chain, il will shrink from 4.5 to 2.5 seconds.
  • Block Proposal time: time it takes observers to become aware of which block is a candidate to be permanently added to the chain, will remain 0.5 seconds
  • Finalized transaction per second: (TPS) it will grow from 1.000 to 46.000, thanks to a truthful approach to block pipelining.

evolution based on solid principles

Decentralization and security are fundamental principles in Algorand and looking at statistics, they will be definitely respected by the performance improvement and all future enrichments of the platform. From a technology, business and delivery prospective, Algorand focuses on building value across its ecosystem over the long-term. Algorand's overarching goal is providing a truly decentralized, public, permissionless network that scales perfectly and eliminates the performance drawbacks of first-generation blockchains.

The growth of a blockchain venture doesn't come to full fruition until local communities become a part of its ecosystem. Their knowledge and insights will create a diverse and thriving platform that expedites the development of the project.

Decentralizing governance

Technically, based on Algorand protocol, there are no fixed few users who are in charge of choosing the next block or approving it. Committees are randomly picked in secrecy from time to time so that everyone has an opportunity to participate in the generation of a new block.

Bottom line, every account can participate in consensus, but not governance. Governance is the power of deciding non-consensus tasks, the funding of grant proposals being an example.

As a next step toward responsible decentralization of the network, Algorand aims to introduce a mechanism for any account to not only participate in consensus, but also to govern and aligning network rewards with such governance. More precisely, it is putting forward the mechanics and incentives guaranteeing a governance that is simultaneously decentralized, secure, and efficient.

Incentives to communities and ecosystem

The Algorand Foundation has proposed a revised, long term model – up to 2030 and beyond. This new model will focus on programs around ecosystem support, community incentives, and the decentralization of decision making and governance on the Algorand blockchain. Central to these programs will be a new community rewards system, benefiting the participants, existing and future, who commit to participate in the governance of the Algorand ecosystem and prove their commitment by locking their Algos for a potentially long term – initially proposed to be one year. The accounts that choose to participate, the governing accounts lock their tokens for a given amount of time. Governing accounts shall be rewarded for their work. The rewards earned by governing accounts will be higher than the current network rewards they will replace. Algorand aims to implement this governance gradually, starting by decentralizing the funding of grant proposal presented to the Foundation.

This new rewards system will be funded by the allocation of previously unassigned funds from within the 10B Algo minted at Genesis, and will be distributed using a new, fully decentralized decision making process:

  • Communities rewards: 2.5B tokens will be initially locked, and allocated toward participation rewards to be distributed over 10 years via automatically operating smart contract optimized to control inflation and achieve scarcity over time.
  • Ecosystem support: 1.25B tokens are being allocated for extended ecosystem support and will be locked in a smart contract. These tokens would be periodically unlocked every 10 years with no more than 200M unlocked in any given year. Unlocked tokens can be used to support grants, strategic initiatives and R&D projects, brought forward by the Foundation or by other partnering entities for approval. For any tokens unused in a given period, they will be re-locked and set to unlock monthly, following the initial 10 year period.

Wrapping up

The world's first-ever open, permissionless, pure proof-of-stake blockchain protocol will foster a secure, scalable, and decentralized platform for today's economy without forking. Since blocks are finalized in seconds, Algorand facilitates smooth transactions on par with an efficient decentralized financial ecosystem enforced by immutable smart contracts that are capable of replacing the traditional financial services with a democratic approach. Algorand has kept up with its promises to disrupt the way people manage their money, transact, earn, and entertain through frictionless finance and it has clearly proven its potential in driving this change.
