Commonwealth Waste Solutions Warns Homeowners that Cold Weather Can Cause Septic Tank Issues

Commonwealth Waste Solutions, a company based in Chesterfield, Virginia, is warning homeowners in Chesterfield and neighboring areas that with the cold weather setting in, they need to take great care in avoiding certain things that could be detrimental to their septic tanks. For instance, oil, grease and fat, due to the colder weather, can harden and cause septic tank blockages. They therefore advise homeowners to get rid most of the grease on utensils first before washing them on the sink.

Another thing to avoid is allowing hazardous substances into the septic tank system. These include paint thinner, gasoline, varnish, solvents, pesticides, herbicides, anti-freeze, polyurethane, and more. These chemicals can disrupt the bacterial equilibrium within the septic tank. This means that solids would not get broken down and could possibly clog the system, which could lead to expensive septic tank repairs.

Homeowners also need to avoid getting large amounts of water into the septic tank system because it is not designed to handle huge quantities of water. This can result in the drain field becoming waterlogged, which could reduce the absorption of wastewater that may result in septic tank blockages. The solution would be to avoid using appliances at the same time, for example, not using jacuzzis and hot tubs at the same time. Homeowners may also want to avoid using the dishwasher and the shower at the same time. Using washing machines and dishwashers only at full loads may also help. That’s because using them at small loads results in the consumption of large amounts of water and more energy.

Jason Muzzy, a representative for Commonwealth Waste Solutions, says, “Routine maintenance is essential to your septic system. A well-maintained system will provide a safe and lawful means of waste disposal for your home’s plumbing system. Proper maintenance will also ensure a healthy and operational system for many years. The more informed you are as a septic system owner and the more familiar you are with the function of your septic system, the better you will be able to care for it.”

He continues, “This winter, the cold weather could bring more trouble for your septic tanks. That’s why we found it necessary to remind our clients and community to be alert and find ways to avoid unnecessary issues.”

Commonwealth Waste Solutions offers septic services to different areas in Hanover County. These include Atlee, Beaverdam, Ashland, Elmont, Hanover Courthouse, Doswell, Mechanicsville, Montpelier, Hanover, Rockville, Studley, and Old Church. The services they provide include: septic tank pumping and cleaning; grease trap cleaning; and hydro jetting. Prospective customers can find the company on their Google Maps page.

Septic tank pumping and cleaning is important because waste builds up inside the septic tank. A septic tank has three layers with the scum forming the uppermost layer, which is composed of toilet tissue, human waste, and other solid materials that flow out from the home. The second layer is waste water, which is also known as the effluent. The bacteria are there to feed on the organic matter in the scum layer, and what is left sinks to the bottom of the tank to form the sludge layer.

Over time, the scum layer thickens and the sludge layer deepens. The result is that there is less effluent and more suspended solids in it. The effluent has to go through the drain field pipe and then seep down through gravel. However, if there’s too much solid material in it, the pipes could get clogged. That is why pumping and cleaning the septic tank regularly is vital.

For commercial establishments like restaurants and others that serve food, grease trap cleaning is recommended. And as mentioned above, grease, fat and oil can be troublesome during cold weather. Commercial kitchens typically have a grease trap to prevent the grease from getting into the septic tank, but this will also require regular cleaning to prevent it from getting clogged.

Those who are interested in septic tank pumping and cleaning services and other related services may want to visit the Commonwealth Waste Solutions website, contact them through telephone or via email. Reviews for the company from past customers may be viewed on their Yelp and YouTube pages.
