An Artist Comes Into Her Own Creative Season

Pioneering textile artist Sanzi Kermes unveils new work in three (3) dynamic exhibitions for the big Fall Mid-Atlantic arts calendar.

Oct. 1, 2018 / PRZen / YORK, Pa. -- Pioneering textile artist Sanzi Kermes has set the standard for the big Fall art Mid-Atlantic calendar as she unveils new work in three (3) dynamic exhibitions including a solo show at Creative York from October 4 - November 20, 2018 in York, Pennsylvania.

First up is a daring outdoor installation "Tumbleweeds" at the Sandy Springs Museum.  The installation is the marriage of Sanzi's original series of prints with contemporary interpretations in this sylvan location: screenprinted fabric tumbleweeds and wood block with haiku delicately placed in nature.  Opening on September 20th at Maryland Art Place (MAP) is "Repurposed with Purpose: Meaning in the Materials of Making."  Sanzi was selected for the exhibition by former Baltimore Museum of Art director, Doreen Bolger.  This much buzzed show is followed-up with a solo exhibition at the trending Creative York where Sanzi unveils six (6) pre-owned wedding gowns from across generations into a spectacular visual display inspired by "Brideshead Revisited."  In a time of chaos in our nation, Sanzi refines and redefines each gown into a color of the pride flag: separate but equal, all appreciated, and unified into one.

An interdisciplinary artist working in a mix of medium from paper to fabric to repurposed items such as a bifold room divider, Sanzi, a Scrabble enthusiast, creates and finds inspiration from the games played, the letters left behind, and the associated numerals.  Sanzi's love of language, letters, numbers and visual arts is omnipresent throughout her work incorporating screen prints, letterpress printing, and senryu.  Senryu is a Japanese form of short poetry akin to haiku, which Sanzi transforms within her work.  "My favorite way to express my love of visual art, language, and my previous vocation as a cartographer have come to fruition in one focused body of work."

Sanzi is a binational American with heritage on her paternal side from Bohemia and Italy on her maternal lineage.  An ex-cartographer, Sanzi graduated from Syracuse University in 1982, with a dual major in Geography and Advertising.  At 35, she left corporate work and found symmetry and balance in creating.  During the next decade, her life took extraordinary turns: widowhood, motherhood, and a Masters of Contemporary Fine Art Practice from Leeds Beckett University, Leeds, United Kingdom.  She lives in Baltimore with her teenage daughter.
