For the first time, contest to hold live auditions in eight Canadian
cities, $20,000 in prizing, including $10,000 grand prize up for grabs
as amateur comedians battle it out for Canadian comedic supremacy
TORONTO, Aug. 8, 2011 /CNW/ - Think you've got the zingers and
one-liners that will have Canadians rolling in the aisles with
laughter, but need some help getting noticed? Then SiriusXM Canada,
the country's leading audio entertainment company, wants you for its
third annual Canada's Next Top Comic contest which is set to give one
lucky Canadian a chance at comedic stardom.
"Canada has many funny comedians working hard to get discovered, but
landing that first big break is tough and that is why this year
SiriusXM is travelling to eight major cities across the country to find
the best comedic talent," said Jeff Leake, Programming Director,
SiriusXM Canada. "Each year we build on the success of the previous
one and grow this contest because we are committed to cultivating
unique Canadian entertainment content, supporting the vibrant Canadian
comedy community and providing our listeners with the emerging Canadian
content they have come to expect from us."
Canadians can join the Canada's Next Top Comic conversation on Twitter,
using the hashtag #TopComic.
SiriusXM Canada is hitting the road in September, visiting eight cities
across the country to discover Canada's next comic superstar. The
winner will take home a cash prize of $10,000 which will be awarded at
a gala event on November 14 in Toronto.
Emerging Canadian comedy stars can register at www.canadasnexttopcomic.com to audition in their city of choice:
Toronto, ON - September 6, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
Halifax, NS - September 14, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
St. John's, NFLD - September 15, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
Ottawa, ON - September 16, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
Winnipeg, MB - September 20, Rumour's Comedy Club
Edmonton, AB - September 21, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
Calgary, AB - September 22, Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club
Vancouver, BC - September 23, Vancouver Comedy Festival
At each stop, SiriusXM will professionally record each contestant as
they deliver up to five minutes of their best original material. A
panel of judges will review the submissions and select the top five
from each city.
The audio from the 40 semi-finalists will then be placed on www.canadasnexttopcomic.com for public vote from October 3 to October 31. Ten finalists will be
chosen - one from each city as selected by the public and two wild card
entries selected by SiriusXM's panel of judges. Each finalist will
receive a $1,000 travel grant provided by SiriusXM to travel to Toronto
and compete live at the November 14 Canada's Next Top Comic gala where
the winner will be announced. SiriusXM listeners can also catch the
gala performance on its Laugh Attack channel.
The gala will be hosted by Matt O'Brien, last year's Canada's Next Top
Comic winner who has had a very busy year since achieving the honour.
"Winning Canada's Next Top Comic in 2010 was just the beginning for me,"
said O'Brien. "SiriusXM's continued support during the last year has
allowed me to develop my skills and progress as a comedian. I am
thankful for their support and cannot wait to host the gala and pass
the torch to the 2011 winner."
