Valley Vista Expands Dual Language Immersion Program

Starting the 2018-2019 academic year, every kindergarten class at Valley Vista Elementary School will be a Dual Language Immersion (DLI) classroom.

The program’s expansion will help Valley Vista become the first non-charter DLI school in the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) and reaffirm its mission to embrace diversity through multicultural language courses.

To date, the district offers 21 Spanish-English dual language immersion programs to 30,000 K-6 grade students. About 36 percent of CVESD students are English Language Learners (ELLs), while 91 percent use Spanish to communicate at home.

Students who participate in the program will receive personalized instruction that integrates critical thinking, creativity and collaborative activities to promote mastery in a second language.

Dual immersion programs provide instruction both English and Spanish to help students develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in the two languages.

In addition to building linguistic competencies, dual immersion education builds a bridge between the diverse communities in Chula Vista, which is located just a few a few miles north of the U.S.-Mexican border.

The district recognizes the importance of an inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of a changing population with varying values and backgrounds.

As student enrollment increases, the district will continue its efforts to expand dual language programs and prioritize student success.
